What happens when Krleža's Glembays return to the stage without lavish scenery, a large ensemble and a classic dramatic adaptation? Glembays: Prose, Vol. 1 is the author's project of Jelena Miholjević and Saša Božić, which returns to its very source – Miroslav Krleža's prose texts from the Glembaj family cycle. Instead of classical dramatization, the play explores the power of Krleža's sentence and the rhythm of his prose language. Reading thus becomes a theatrical act, and the voice of the actress becomes a space in which the characters, relationships and moral breakdowns of one of the most famous families of Croatian literature come to life again. Glembays are a symbol of wealth, power and social prestige, but behind their shining surface lies hypocrisy, greed, guilt and moral ruin. Krleža's story about a family simultaneously becomes a story about a society in which money and status often determine the value of a person. In an intimate and minimalist performance by Jelena Miholjević, the audience gets the opportunity to hear and experience Krleža in a different way – through a concentrated encounter with text, language and the voice of an actor. Glembays: Prose, Vol. 1 calls for a new reading of one of the key works of Croatian literature and for exploring the boundary between literature and theatre.
