Germany, France, Hungary 2025 147 mins The film Silent Friend of Hungarian visionary Ildikó Enyedi is one of the most ambitious European projects of 2025. It is a meditative masterpiece that continues the director's fascination with the boundary between dreams, nature and human consciousness. It is structured as a triptych that takes place in three different time periods: 1908, 1972 and 2020. All three stories are connected by one tree — the huge and ancient Ginkgo biloba, in the botanical garden in Marburg. The tree is not just a background, but a protagonist who “witnesses” human dramas: from a young botanist from the beginning of the century, through the student unrest of the 1970s, to a modern scientist. The film explores the subjectivity of time and the deep, silent connection of plant life with human destiny, and ultimately asks the question - What does the tree "think" of us? – exploring the limits of anthropocentrism. Enyedi has worked on this film for years, carefully selecting locations and actors from different cultural circles, and the engagement of legendary Hong Kong star Tony Leung (known from the Wong Kar-wai films) has attracted huge attention from the world media, because this is one of his rare roles in European production. Ildikó Enyedi made her name with the film On Body and Soul (The Golden Bear in Berlin). She is known for her poetic style that combines magical realism with deep psychological analysis. In this film, she goes a step further, trying to "decentralize" man and show the world from the perspective of nature that surrounds and outlives us.
